there is the rest of news reports over the weekend and this morning telling us how vital the debates are. we're here to offer a thought today on really helping all of these debates and how to evaluate to start off with. the analysis may be the only certain thing we know about the debates of this point. we hope to go further than that. and assist you watching today in the studio, watching on c- span and live streaming to develop tips and tools to watch the debates. television debates began in 1960 with john f. kennedy facing vice-president nixon. the next debates were not until 1976. a commission was set up to run the debates. at town hall format was introduced in 1992, which will be the format for the second debate. -- a town hall format was introduced in 1992. the final debate returns to the moderator and candidates on october 22 at lynn university of florida. on the panel today to discuss going beyond winning and losing, and we will move from my immediate left, correspondent of the new york times, abc news and nbc news and participant in the first televised debate in 1960 in chicag

romney by a 22-point margin. those results match other polling that shows those comments alienated undecided voters. regardless of what you think of the substance of that it statement from mr. romney, it did turn the whole republican pundit class against him, called every candidate in a contested race to distance themselves from the presidential nominee of their party to start campaigning against mitt romney, telling voters, listen, i don't like that guy on that issue either, but vote for me any way even though i'm a republican. whether or not you think the remarks were scandalous, the polling impact of them is now showing up directly at a time when mr. romney's egregiously bad polling numbers seem to be calcifying and when most voters are now starting to vote. an incredibly negative impact for romney and his campaign at a difficult time for them. now on the eve of the first presidential debate, if they were hoping to put that behind them, any hope of getting away from the issue has now been expunged because "the

this is before obama's announcement. it's only in the republican party down at 22%. that's what's keeping the overall number in the low to mid 50s. outside the republican party this is basically a settled issue. that means when you put it in a blue state, maine clearly blue, washington clearly blue, maryland clearly blue. the odds are very good that this thing is going to pass comfortably. minnesota we think of as a blue state but it is actually, as it gets closer, three, four, five point win for democrats commonly there, a lot more social conservatives there so it is not surprising it me it's a little closer than minnesota but i think we're at the point where if this goes on the ballot in a blue state it passes. in a swing state it could pass, it might not pass. if it's on the ballot in mississippi or kentucky or places like where it is republican heavy you're a long way away from there, a real long way spending the day today with ted olson seeing his passion and commitment on this issue and also seeing how central he is to the republican party politics, do individu
